Myths and Facts of Microneedling

Microneedling has taken the skincare world by storm as a modern treatment to rejuvenate skin. For those who don’t know, this revolutionary cosmetic procedure uses fine needles to create thousands of tiny puncture wounds in the first layer of your skin. The micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing response, which in turn kickstarts collagen production on your face. Microneedling is an effective skincare treatment to give you that fresh, plump look.

Despite its surge in popularity, there is still a lot of misinformation out there about microneedling. Find out the truth about this procedure here.

Myth: Microneedling is the same whether it’s performed at home or in a medical spa.

Fact: While both treatments involve making a bunch of tiny needle punctures in your skin, the main difference is the length of the needles. Microneedling at home usually uses 0.2-millimeter needles. Anything larger should only be used in a dermatologist’s office since they come with a greater risk of infection and skin injury. Microneedling in a professional setting uses either the traditional dermaroller or its technological upgrade called dermapen with needles up to 2 millimeters long.

Myth: Microneedling is dangerous and painful.

Fact: Microneedling at home is 100 percent safe and painless. Because the needles are so tiny, the roller will not likely draw blood or cause any infection or skin injury. Medical microneedling uses longer needles, though, so it can cause blood to come to the surface. Nevertheless, a numbing cream is normally applied before the treatment begins. It is often left on the skin for half an hour or so, making the procedure virtually painless for most people. When done by a licensed professional, microneedling is perfectly safe.

Myth: Microneedling leaves holes in your skin.

Facts: While it’s true that microneedling involves making tiny wounds at the very first layer of your skin to trigger new collagen production, all it creates are microscopic holes that are essentially invisible to the naked eye. Besides, these microscopic holes seal within just a few hours. You may see a pink flush to your skin, but this should dissipate in 24 to 48 hours. This is totally normal so don’t worry.

Myth: Microneedling can be done all over the skin on your face except around the eyes and lips.

Fact: Thanks to the technological advancements in the cosmetic industry, microneedling can be performed safely around the eyes and lips with the right device. However, since the skin around the eyes and lips are thinner, you cannot go as deep as in the cheek, for instance. Rest assured that the effects of this treatment on sagging skin around the eyes are extraordinary.

Myth: Microneedling is only for people who are worried about aging.

Fact: Sure, this procedure is effective in preventing the aging process, but adults of any age can benefit from it too. After microneedling, you can look forward to an enhanced skin tone and texture. This trend has taken off not just because of its anti-aging effects but also for eliminating acne scars, dark spots, hyperpigmentation, and even the look of stretch marks.
