Vaginoplasty

Over the course of a woman’s life, changes such as childbirth and the aging process can cause the muscles of the vagina to lose some of their natural strength and tenacity. As they become looser, the loss of friction can cause a decrease in sexual pleasure for themselves and, in some cases, their partner. It can also make it difficult or impossible for a woman to use tampons during menstruation.

The goal of vaginoplasty is to tighten the walls of the vagina with the intention of making the vaginal canal much more toned. This relatively straightforward procedure takes place under general anesthesia and most patients are able to go home the same day. Once any extra skin is removed from inside the vagina, the underlying area is tightened using strong sutures, which are dissolvable, meaning that there is no need to return for a secondary procedure. The mucosal skin is then closed, completing the procedure. The result is a tighter, firmer vaginal canal that makes tampon use easier and increases sexual satisfaction.

As you might expect, you will need several weeks to recover. You will be given specific advice for keeping the area as clean as possible which will minimize your risk of infection. You will also need to avoid using tampons or having sexual intercourse for at least 8 weeks.
