Facial Fillers

Facial fillers are a very popular form of cosmetic treatment that works by plumping out the skin, restoring lost volume and pulling the skin tighter so that the patient looks younger and more youthful than before. They are most often administered into the parts of the skin where sagging is most common. This includes around the eyes, into the cheeks, mouth and also the jawline. All facial fillers are administered by injection, and this leads to them often being referred to as ‘injectables’. The needles used in fillers are very fine, and most patients don’t find the procedure too uncomfortable. Topical anesthetic may be given if necessary. The results of all facial fillers are temporary, although exactly how long you expect your new appearance to last will depend on the type of filler you choose and how your body responds to it.

Some of the most popular facial fillers include the following:

Juvéderm

Juvédermis the world’s leading brand of hyaluronic (HA) facial filler. It works by adding HA into the facial tissue which stimulates the production of collagen – a naturally occurring substances that plumps and adds volume to the area. Juvéderm contains a small amount of lidocaine, meaning anesthetic isn’t necessary. The results of treatment are visible immediately and can last up to 2 years.

Restylane

Restylane is another very popular brand of filler. It also has hyaluronic acid as its main ingredient and works in the same way as all fillers, plumping the skin to make it look smoother and more youthful. It also contains lidocaine to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. Restylane results typically begins to wear off between 6 and 12 months after it is administered.

Radiesse

Radiesse is a dermal filler that is most often recommended for moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as those that form between the corner of the nose and the corner of the mouth (the nasolabial folds). Rather than HA, it uses calcium-based microspheres to stimulate collagen production and improve the strength and elasticity of the skin. The effects of Radiesse usually last between 12 and 18 months.
